Context‐sensitive dance–vocal displays affect song patterns and partner responses in a socially monogamous songbird

چکیده
Multimodal signaling contributes to efficient communication by improving signal efficacy and increasing information. Songbirds often combine dance displays with songs according the socio-sexual context; therefore, song is assumed function differently depending on displays. In this study, we tested how affect patterns responses of paired partners using male female blue-capped cordon-bleus (Uraeginthus cyanocephalus). Blue-capped are a socially monogamous estrildid finch, both males females perform distinct “tap dance”-like Songs were longer more stereotyped than without in females. Furthermore, showed gestural those performed under isolated conditions, whereas only when focal bird was housed partner. These results suggest that had different functions social contexts. The multimodal display seems draw attention physical abilities performer.

Parasites affect song complexity and neural development in a songbird.
There is now considerable evidence that female choice drives the evolution of song complexity in many songbird species. However, the underlying basis for such choice remains controversial. The developmental stress hypothesis suggests that early developmental conditions can mediate adult song complexity by perturbing investment in the underlying brain nuclei during their initial growth. Here, we...
متن کاملExtrapair Fertilizations and the Potential for Sexual Selection in a Socially Monogamous Songbird
—Variation in mating success among individuals is the basis for sexual selection and the evolution of elaborate secondary sexual traits. In socially monogamous species, variation in mating success is generally thought to be small, but a skewed adult sex ratio, differences in female fecundity, and extrapair fertilizations that arise from matings outside the social pair bond can increase variance...
متن کاملFemale Song Rate and Structure Predict Reproductive Success in a Socially Monogamous Bird
Bird song is commonly regarded as amale trait that has evolved through sexual selection. However, recent research has prompted a re-evaluation of this view by demonstrating that female song is an ancestral and phylogenetically widespread trait. Species with female song provide opportunities to study selective pressures and mechanisms specific to females within the wider context of social compet...
متن کاملOxytocin-like receptors mediate pair bonding in a socially monogamous songbird.
Although many species form socially monogamous pair bonds, relevant neural mechanisms have been described for only a single species, the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster). In this species, pair bonding is strongly dependent upon the nonapeptides oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin, in females and males, respectively. Because monogamy has evolved many times in multiple lineages, data from additional...
متن کاملLooking after your partner: sentinel behaviour in a socially monogamous bird
Natural selection favours those individuals with effective anti-predator defences. The presence of sentinels is known to be an effective form of defence amongst stable groups of individuals within cooperative and polygynous breeding systems. However, the presence of sentinels in the more prevalent socially monogamous breeding systems remains overlooked as an important benefit of such partnershi...
